The Hidden History of the Faraway Town Clock Tower
By Local History Guild | October 29, 2025
Most residents hear its chime every hour, but few know the full story of the Faraway Town Clock Tower. Built in 1928, the tower was not just a timepiece, but a symbol of the town's ambition and prosperity during the railroad boom.
Financed by industrialist Jedediah Faraway himself, its bricks were sourced from the old quarry on Mill Road, and its intricate clockwork was imported from Switzerland. The tower survived the '54 blizzard and the '78 flood, standing as a silent witness to our town's history. Join us as we explore the hidden room at the top, the stories behind the names carved into its foundation, and the dedicated family that has kept its gears turning for three generations.
Ask Agnes: A Guide to Autumn Gardening in Faraway
By Agnes Green | Gardening Correspondent
Dear readers, with the first frost just around the corner, many of you have written in asking what to do with your gardens. Don't hang up your trowel just yet! Autumn is a crucial time for prep and planting.
1. Protect Your Perennials:
Now is the time to add a good 2-3 inch layer of mulch (shredded leaves or straw work beautifully) around the base of your delicate perennials. This insulates the roots from the coming freeze-thaw cycles.
2. Plant Your Bulbs:
Want a burst of color next spring? Get those tulip, daffodil, and crocus bulbs in the ground now! Plant them two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall. A little work now pays off beautifully in March.
3. Don't Forget the Garlic:
October is the perfect month to plant garlic for a robust harvest next summer. Separate the cloves and plant them pointed-end-up, about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart.
