Gazebo Renovation Budget Approved After Tense Council Deliberation

The Faraway Town Council has officially allocated $50,000 to proceed with the renovation of the historic park gazebo. The measure passed yesterday evening with a tight 3-2 vote, concluding a lengthy debate over municipal spending priorities.

The approved budget will cover structural repairs, a new, weather-resistant copper roof, and the installation of custom-built, accessible seating. The goal is to restore the gazebo to its original 1920s appearance, while ensuring it can be used for community events for decades to come.

Councilman Jim Henderson cast the sole dissenting vote against the majority, stating, "While I fully support the park, this expenditure is simply too high when compared to the pressing needs for our road maintenance budget. We must prioritize function over historic aesthetics right now." The bidding process for contractors is expected to begin immediately.

Community Generosity Soars: Book Drive Collects Record 500+ Books

The Faraway Town Library’s annual book drive was a massive success, surpassing its goal and collecting over 500 brand-new and gently used books for the district's elementary schools. Librarian Mr. Peter Chung credited the local businesses and families who contributed generously.

The collection focused on securing high-interest books for K-5 students, including illustrated stories, simple non-fiction, and diverse titles representing many backgrounds. The books will be sorted and delivered next week, helping to refresh classroom libraries just in time for the second half of the school year.

"The response was overwhelming. Every book collected is a chance for a young student to discover a new passion," Mr. Chung stated. "Thank you to everyone who made this possible."
